New York City's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to live in the iconic Gracie Mansion, departing from the rent-stabilised apartment that sparked debate in his run for office.

An Iconic Home

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the mayoral home for the majority of New York City mayors since the World War II era.

But, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a core policy, hesitated to declare his residency plans immediately following his triumph in November.

"My choice came down to keeping my family safe and the imperative to focusing my full attention on implementing the affordability agenda the city's residents elected me on," Mamdani said in a statement.

Leaving Astoria

His home was in Astoria, Queens, an area famous for its diverse immigrant communities and global cuisine.

"To the people of Astoria: many thanks for exemplifying what is great about New York City," he expressed.

"While I may no longer live in the neighborhood, the community will forever remain a part of me and my work," he affirmed.

Campaign Controversy

In his campaign, Mamdani linked his core platform – halting rent increases – to his personal living arrangements.

Yet his rivals, including former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for living in the apartment although he hails from a well-known family.

A House Not Always Used

Not every mayor have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, kept his residence in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side throughout his time in office, which wrapped up in 2012.

Instead, Bloomberg argued it could serve as a place for civic gatherings, and advocated for significant upgrades of the older mansion.

A Grand New Home

As he settles into Gracie Mansion sometime around his first day on 1 January, he will be surrounded by a setting very different than his previous Astoria digs.

With its cream-colored walls, forest green window covers, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure with views of the East River.

Inside, the lower floor of the historically styled mansion is decorated consistent with the home's early 19th-century origins.

The estate, which is said to has five bedrooms, also has fortified protections to secure the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

Past occupants have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that they experienced doors opening and closed by themselves, and the floors emitted odd sounds.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "I don't care the skeptics say," he insisted in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."

Affordable Housing Lifeline

The apartment he is leaving is rent stabilised, meaning the city imposes caps on how much property owners can raise the rent each year.

City residents see such units as valuable lifelines as the housing expenses outpaces the means of many residents.

Data indicated Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Based on data from the real estate platform Zillow, the median rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
