Edwards and O'Neil represent the early candidates under consideration to succeed the former manager as head coach of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The previous coach was sacked on Sunday after the team's 10-match without a victory start to the Premier League campaign.
And Edwards and O'Neil - each of whom have historic associations to the team - are among the options to be considered by the Wolves ownership.
The manager is presently at Middlesbrough, which would pose a possible hurdle to his appointment at Wolves' stadium.
However the ex- Luton Town head coach - who made more than 100 of games for the club during his time as a player - is said to be a strong contender for the vacancy.
The 42-year-old is reportedly enjoys support from the club board as they begin the process of appointing a fresh manager.
O'Neil is additionally emerging as a surprise contender, although he would be a surprising appointment considering he was released by the club in December last year.
The former West Ham midfielder is currently unemployed which means the club would not be required to pay any compensation.
