A uniquely yellow-colored apartment block visible behind helped us locate the video.
Our team is verifying images and video shared this morning that show the scene of a reported vehicle-borne explosive explosion that authorities in Russia say killed a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.
Officials in Russia confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that detonated and that he later died of his wounds. An investigation is under way.
Our starting point to check the location from which the pictures originated was based on posts saying the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.
Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to match the distinctive yellow colour of a nearby residential complex seen in the footage.
Locating other structures, streetlights and the road configuration confirmed the exact location the pictures were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were recent and that the visuals had not undergone digital alteration.
