European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says
The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.
The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
